Ground Maintenance Assistant

We are recruiting for a Grounds Maintenance Assistant to work within an independent school which stands in over 25 acres of grounds based in a village between Guildford & Leatherhead.

You will be responsible for ensuring that that all gardens, woodlands and amenity areas are maintained to the highest standards. Planting and keeping the herbaceous borders, hedges and lawns to a high standard at all times.

Salary: £22,000 to £24,000

Hours: Wednesday to Sunday, 8:30am – 5:30pm

Benefits: 25 days paid holiday plus statutory bank holidays.

DBS: Successful candidate will be subject to an enhanced DBS check

Other: Full driving licence is essential

Assist in the day to day management of the school grounds and sports pitches. To ensure the maintenance of the landscaping of the School and grounds is maintained to the highest standard. This may include assisting with:

• Grass cutting and maintaining a clean and tidy appearance.
• Keep all hedges properly trimmed and to keep the ivy and other shrubs under control.
• Maintain the Forest School and Prep Playgrounds.
• Keep Car Parks and other hard surfaces clean and tidy.
• Assist in the maintaining of all access areas to the Sports Block and playing fields.
• Cut the grass around all buildings as well as tending the flowerbeds, hanging baskets (including out of school hours).
• Maintain all the woodland areas with the assistance of outside contractors.
• Clear leaves from around the site.
• Keeping all sheds, outbuildings and storage areas in a safe, clean and tidy condition.
• Clearing snow and gritting to ensure all pupils, visitors and staff have safe access.
• Maintain gutter clearance to ensure rainwater flows without blockage.
• Ensure the School Grounds are always clear from litter.
• Assist and chaperone all external contractors as required.
• Advise on the repair or replacement of faulty equipment.
• Carpark duty in the morning and/or the afternoon as required

Do you have the required skills & experience?

• Previous experience in a similar role, of working in a School environment
• Experience of Horticulture.
• Experience with Chainsaw
• Driving licence with no more than 6 points
• A good working knowledge of health & safety.
• Able to effectively organise own work and operate as loan worker.
• Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in written form and to understand and interpret written instructions.
• Able to regularly handle/carry heavy items.
• Good inter-personal skills and sense of humour.
• Polite and courteous.
• Calm and patient under pressure.
• Able to show initiative and work proactively to ensure the smooth running of the site.
• An organised approach and excellent time management skills
• The ability to work well as part of a team
